英國科學家開發出新品的、產量高出普通小麥30%的“超級小麥”

  英國劍橋國家農業園藝研究所表示,他們將一種原始小麥品種與一個現代麥種雜交,開發出了這種新型的高產量小麥品種。新品種小麥的整個雜交過程未使用轉基因技術。

  在早期實驗種植過程中,這種超級小麥比現代小麥個頭更大、更強壯、產量也更多。

  從測試到最終在田間種植還需至少5年的時間。

  一些農戶則認為,由于全球糧食供給面臨前所未有挑戰,因此政府對糧食新品種認證周期應縮短,以便類似高產新品種可盡早投入實際生產。

British scientists say they have developed a new type ofwheat which could increase productivity by 30%.

TheCambridge-based National Institute of Agricultural Botany has combinedan ancient ancestor of wheat with a modern variety to produce a new strain.

In earlytrials, the resulting crop seemed bigger and stronger than the current modernwheat varieties.

It will take atleast five years of tests and regulatory approval before it is harvested byfarmers.

Some farmers,however, are urging new initiatives between the food industry, scientists andgovernment.

They believethe regulatory process needs to be speeded up to ensure that the global foodsecurity demands of the next few decades can be met, says the BBC’s Tom Heap.

Primitivegrains

One in five ofall the calories consumed round the world come from wheat.

But despitesteady improvement in the late 20th century, the last 15 years have seen littlegrowth in the average wheat harvest from each acre in Britain.

Just lastmonth, cereal maker Weetabix announced thatit would have to scale back production of some of its products due to a poorwheat harvest in the UK.
